Music Legal Elite 2025: The Attorneys Behind the Top Stars and Big Deals Rocking the Biz from AI and Beyonce to Shaboozey and ‘Weird Al’ YankovicAfter being decimated by illegal downloading in the 2000s, the music business is riding high on legal streaming, which hit $20.5 billion in global revenues in 2024, marking a 4.8% year-over-year increase, according to the IFPI Global Music Report 2025. This has, in turn, bolstered the brisk market for lawyers who broker music catalog deals, such as Big Loud’s sale of a minority interest in Morgan Wallen’s catalog to Chord Music Partners for $200 million in April.Dirty little secret: “People don’t really think of lawyering as a fun endeavor, because it is a serious [thing], where we’re kind of like the intellectual property bodyguards of our clients,” Rosenberg says, but he feels the democratization of music and the freedom it has engendered has increased the dealmaking fun factor.Just because they pay, it doesn’t mean it’s stolen: “It’s sometimes cheaper to just pay on the claim rather than hire lawyers and litigate,” he says.
This is a weekly column for The Cincinnati Enquirer.
I ran into a friend I hadn't seen for some time, and he told me he really enjoyed a column I'd done a few months back about lawyer movies. So, I decided to go back to the pop culture well and come up with a list of lawyer songs.I have to admit, not as many options came to mind, and I eliminated some that might seem obvious. For example, Warren Zevon's "Lawyers, Guns and Money" didn't make the cut. Great song, but it only mentions lawyers in passing. The same goes for "Lawyers in Love" by Jackson Browne. My second song is "Johnny 99" from Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska" album. It's a dark number about a guy who loses his job at an auto plant and winds up killing a night clerk. The Judge – "Mean John Brown" – proposes to sentence the guy to 99 years (hence the title "Johhny 99"). But Johnny stands up and proceeds to argue for the death penalty – for himself. I think this proves the axiom "a person who represents himself has a fool for a lawyer" about as well as anything. My list contains songs that put the lawyer, or at least the legal process, front and center.

“Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name of This Song So We Wouldn’t Get Sued” (originally titled "My Name Is David Ruffin and These Are the Temptations") is a song by American rock band Fall Out Boy. It is the first track on their second studio album, From Under the Cork Tree, and was released on May 3, 2005, through DCD2 and Island Records. The song was originally called “My Name Is David Ruffin And These Are The Temptations,” before Fall Out Boy’s lawyers intervened and made them change the title.Although he was a very talented singer and performed lead vocals on many of The Temptations hits, the group went on without him and had several more hits; Ruffin died of a cocaine overdose in 1991. The song is a warning about the trappings of fame, and if Fall Out Boy kept the original title, they would have risked a lawsuit from Ruffin’s estate. The song is introduced by the clicking of numerous cameras, the sound celebrities hear as they walk down the red carpet.
