Main Post: any good songs about lawyers? - Cafe Society - Straight Dope Message Board
Top Comment: Hey, all. I’m doing write-on for law review this week, and I could use some music to be lawyerly by. Anyone know any good songs about lawyers? Or, failing that, do the LawDopers have anything they particularly enjoy listening to while they Bluebook?
Best Lawyer Songs?
Main Post:
Dear esteemed colleagues,
What’s the best song about lawyers/the legal profession, in your opinion? For me the obvious answer is Lawyers, Guns and Money by the late great Warren Zevon. Any other favorites?
I am putting together a playlist for my firm’s holiday party. Also, I’m in need of a lighthearted distraction today.

Jesus and his lawyer?
Main Post:
Eels are one of my favourite bands, and "Novocaine for the Soul" is one of my favourite songs by them. However, it has strange line: "Life is white and I am black Jesus and his lawyer are coming back"
What does mean? It is critique of religion? Is that only joke? Who's Jesus' lawyer?

How to find a music attorney?
Main Post:
That's the question. For a bit of context: I'm about to release my 1st EP, I might sign a distribution deal with a label soon, and I know I need to have an attorney.
Also: how does the attorney/musician relationship work (financially, contract)?
Top Comment: I'm not trying to give a dickish answer here but you can just google "music attorney in [your city]." Then just contact a couple, tell them what you'd want/need done, and they'll let you know how they charge. Having one on retainer is usually 5% of your earnings, but for stuff like this you can pay hourly. Which will vary wildly depending on quality and/or how desperate for work they are lol.

Meaning of “I’m Like a Lawyer with the Way I’m Trying to Get You Off (Me and You)”
Main Post:
“I’m Like a Lawyer with the Way I’m Trying to Get You Off (Me and You)” is probably my favorite song of all time by far, but I’m not too sure on what the meaning is. I’ve done a little research and it seems that it’s about a relationship due to fail. “If I woke up next to you” seems to be the speaker saying, ‘if we stayed with each other, maybe I’ll feel something more than feeling as if I was in a one night stand.’ “Prettier and younger but not any better off” referencing to young love seeming sweet and innocent but instead it’s not any better than really any other type of love. What do you guys think?
Top Comment: I'm not the best at lyrical analysis, but this post got me excited because it's my favorite FOB song as well and I never see anyone else say that. Something about it is just so magically hopeful and sad at the same time. I've never been able to quite figure out what it means but I know it makes me feel things
TIL "Philadelphia lawyer" was originally used to describe “a lawyer knowledgeable in the most minute aspects of the law.”
Main Post:
The first use of it in this way was recorded back in 1788, per the dictionary, when Philadelphia was the center of government and of thinking about the newly forming U.S. legal system.
The phrase stuck around, but its meaning began to change.
In a 1962 book called “Derisive Use of Ethnic Names,” author Ed Cray references the Guthrie song and lists the definition thusly: “Philadelphia lawyer — the ultimate in crooked lawyers (much to the dismay of the Pennsylvania Bar Association)
